I have some exciting news! I’ve decided on a career change from UI/UX front-end development, to focus on photography. More on this - www.jpoh.blog/jonathan-…

Wow. Got an email from PhotoStation (authorised Canon service centre in Lisbon) yesterday at 5pm that they are closing down today, and I should collect my lenses that I dropped off for repair. It’s been with them since August and apparently only one of them got fixed. 😡

Oh no. My new BenQ SW321C appears to have a bunch of dark/dead pixels 😭

Can’t believe PhotoPills Camp 2023 is already sold out, less than 24 hours after the announcement email was sent out. I was (still am) keen to go, some of my most admired photographers will be there.

Oof, it’s a big fella.

It’s here! My re-print of (F)light Trails, nearly double the size, and with improved processing and editing to correctly colour-match the printed output. It is incredible, and I’m very happy with how it came out, considering what a difficult image it is to work on

After a long hiatus, I’m getting back into astrophotography.

I took a bit of time to reprocess one of my father’s photographs taken 10 years ago, on a 3 megapixel camera. This is the result.

Was out late to Santa Susana again, this time with a new friend, the guy I bought the modified Canon 6D camera from, for a spot of astrophotography again. This time there were no campers so the area was super dark, though there’s still light pollution from the cities all around

Milky Way at Pego do Altar reservoir, near Santa Susana, Alcácer do Sal, Portugal
Same source images as the previous version, but processed differently in Photoshop.
Managed to bring out a lot more detail and colour that I did not even realise was there!

Goodbye Canon EOS 60D. All boxed up and ready to be sent to MPB to be traded in.
You were a great friend that helped me vastly improve my photography skills several years back. May you find a new owner that would get as much joy and delight as I did in discovering photography.
Shot taken with the ‘new’ astro-modified Canon EOS 6D with EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens. The Baader filter replacement gives everything a pinkish/purplish tint.

I’ve somehow ended up with a few cameras…
I’m keeping the Canon EOS 10D as a momento as it used to belong to my Dad, selling the Canon EOS 60D, and the new (to me) 6D will be used for astrophotography. Keeping the two Olympus OM-Ds for travel and general photography.

Just picked up a used, astro-modified Canon EOS 6D earlier this evening. Looking forward to learning how to use it for capturing the night sky. A full frame sensor would help!

Milky Way over Pego do Altar reservoir, Portugal
This is my most successful Milky Way shot so far. Still learning to use stacking to reduce noise and improve the image quality.
Stack of 112 light frames, 2 dark frames, stacked using an app called Sequator, post-processing in Lightroom Classic. Manfrotto tripod with ball-head, no equatorial mount.

so it wasn’t all as bad as I thought. The Canon service centre technicians told me that the two camera bodies are fine, no mould or even dust on the sensors. However the lenses are a different story.
The 40mm f/2.8 STM is fine, but there are some spots on the front element, probably from a botched cleaning job and rubbing off of the coating. The 28-105mm is unfortunately too badly infested that the lens is etched, AND it’s such an old lens that Canon doesn’t make spare parts for it anymore, so that’s a goner.
The 50mm f/1.8 is probably a straightforward cleaning, wasn’t too bad. The remaining two lenses, they will try to clean them at first and see how they go, and hopefully wouldn’t require any replacements of the lens elements. The 100-400mm L is also out of support from Canon so if the lenses are scratched/etched then they can’t really do anything about it, which is a shame, that is a great lens.

Mouldy camera gear 😭
After I bought the Olympus OM-D E-M10 mirrorless camera and acquiring micro-4/3 lenses, I gave my Canon EOS 60D (and the 10D that belonged to my dad) to my brother in Malaysia.
Sadly he didn’t make any use of it, and it stayed in the backpack for over 2 years, unprotected from the humid climate. On a recent trip back there, I decided to bring it back with me and see if I could either make use of it, or sell it.
Upon closer inspection and doing some tests, I found that ALL the lenses have mold growing on them, some on the inner elements as well. I suspect there may also be mold or other particles on the camera sensors or mirrors.
I’m dropping them off at the Canon authorized repair centre today to see what the damage is and how much it might cost to have it cleaned and serviced. I suspect it won’t be cheap!

Been a long time since I’ve done any astrophotography and I’m a bit rusty. Attempted to catch the Perseids meteorites (unsuccessfully) so here are some star trails at Barragem de Vale do Gaio (Vale do Gaio dam)
